The white PA 12 powder is also available in filled variants. In combination with an additional material, these filled PA 12 materials are tailored to meet special requirements. The filled PA 12 powders for 3D printing are basically characterised by the same properties as the unfilled types: They are robust, lastingly stable, resistant to chemicals and extremely versatile. The filled PA 12-based materials are ideal for use as a substitute for plastics such as ABS or PA 6, which have proven themselves in injection moulding.
Which filled plastics do we offer for SLS 3D printing?
We use three different filled PA 12 variants in additive manufacturing. PA 12 with flame retardant is a proven material for the aerospace industry. PA12 filled with glass beads is thermally highly resilient and often used in the automotive industry. Alumide, namely PA 12 filled with aluminium , has a metallic appearance and can be reworked very well.

This powder material based on polyamide 12 contains a halogenated flame retardant and is white. In the event of a fire, the chemical flame retardant forms a carbonising layer that insulates and protects the underlying material. Due to its good refreshability, it is very economical compared to other flame-retardant materials. Laser-sintered components made of PA 12 with flame retardant are tensile and stretchable at the same time.

Due to the special flame protection of the polyamide, 3D-printed PA-12-FR components are particularly suitable for use in the aerospace industry. For aviation, the material meets the CS-25 approval requirements (certification specifications for large aeroplanes) and the now obsolete JAR-25 (joint aviation requirements). As a result, the use of components made of PA 12 with flame retardant is officially approved for large, turbine-powered aircraft with an overall weight of 5670 kg or more. PA 12 FR is also an economical material for laser sintering in electrical engineering.

Components made of white PA 12 powder filled with glass beads impress with their high rigidity and good elongation at break and are particularly wear-resistant and thermally resilient. Given that it is reinforced with glass beads, this polyamide comes very close to the properties of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic. If necessary, the powder can be infiltrated with colour.

Laser sintering with PA 12 GF produces components that are particularly suitable for the automotive industry, especially for the engine sector, due to their high thermal resilience. PA 12 with glass beads is also a good choice as a moulding material for deep-drawing tools. The SLS process can be used to produce prototypes and fully functional series components with PA 12 GF in a short space of time.

The metallic-grey Alumide, aluminium-filled PA 12 powder, is characterised by its high rigidity, metallic appearance and good post-processing capabilities. The surfaces of Alumide components can be very easily finished by means of grinding, polishing or coating. Machining is simplified by the chip-breaking effect of the aluminium filling. Alumide additionally impresses with its very high temperature resistance, which is reflected in its excellent dimensional stability at high temperatures. As a result, parts made of Alumide can be used functionally at elevated temperatures.
Alumide is an ideal material for 3D-printed components that appear metallic but are actually made of lightweight plastic yet are heat resistant and durable. The SLS process with Alumide also produces very clean and detailed results.
Fields of application of 3D printing SLS Alumide
Thanks to its good mechanical and thermal properties, 3D printing of Alumide objects is suitable for the automotive industry, for example for wind tunnel tests. Alumide is also often used in model making, partly because of the metallic appearance of the lightweight components. Metallic-looking prototypes and small series can be printed quickly with Alumide and are fully operational and functional.
