How industrial 3D printing processes work

Three technologies – one goal: precise components, reliably manufactured. Here you can find out how HSS MJF, SLM and SLS work and how they differ.

SLM - SLS - HSS - MJF

Additive manufacturing means more than just “printing from powder”. Each process follows specific physical principles that significantly influence material selection, component properties and manufacturing efficiency. In the following, you will learn about three key technologies – from plastic to metal.

Selective Laser Melting

SLM - Metal 3D printing

Metal powder is applied in layers and completely melted by a focused laser. This produces dense, mechanically highly resilient metal components - ideal for demanding industrial applications.

Selective laser sintering

SLS - Plastic 3D printing

Here, plastic powder is processed layer by layer using laser sintering. The result is robust, geometrically free components without the use of tools - particularly suitable for functional prototypes and small series.

High Speed Sintering

HSS MJF

In "High Speed Sintering / Multi Jet Fusion", plastic powder is applied and specifically treated with a fusing medium before infrared energy causes the fusion. This process is characterized by high speed and good detail resolution.

Why the way it works is crucial

The choice of the right process influences:

  • Material properties: Strength, density, temperature and chemical resistance.

  • Freedom of design: Whether complex geometries can be realized or not.

  • Efficiency and costs: Tool costs are eliminated, post-processing varies greatly, powder recirculation is different.

  • Series and variant capability: faster response times, less stock, more flexible production.

"The difference between the processes is not in the name, but in how energy, material and time interact. Those who understand this build better components."
